About the Books

Old Bones & Battered Book Ends

25 poets from British Columbia and beyond unite within these covers to explore the lofty topic of Ageingits impacts and its implications. Curated by Ian Cognito and Pat Smekal, this anthology presents poems which explore ageing through humour and com passion as the authors examine their own ageing and that of near ones, tapping into both the universal and the personal for their reflections.

The poets in Old Bones & Battered Bookends contemplate one of the most profound experiences we hold in commongetting older. From the days when our progress is chronicled on doorframes in inches of celebration to a growing reluctance to mark yet another milestone, we age in shared, and yet deeply personal, sometimes solitary ways. Our need for companionship on this journey is as old as the bones of humanity. Each of its way stations is as newly surprising to us as the discovery of another aching joint, a new wrinkle or grey hair, the declining vision that alters how we see ourselves and how others may see us. Our appreciation for getting older, like all journeys, is as much about what we pass through as what we attend to. - from the Foreword by Anne Marie Carson

Much Adieu About Nothing

Following their successful pairing on 2017’s flora, fauna & h. sapiens, Pat Smekal and Ian Cognitō have reunited to explore the ins and outs of our mortality, the afterlife, and the "D" word. This collection explores this rather lofty topic through elements of humour, introspection, and compassion and serves as a companion piece to Old Bones & Battered Book Ends (an anthology on Ageing curated by these same two authors), also on Repartee Press.

Animusings

In this collection, Ian Cognitō taps into the Ani-Muse to muse, amuse, and niggle as he reports, re-imagines, and interprets animal behaviour and our own.

Flora, Fauna & H. Sapiens

First conceived as a performance set, this collection serves as a written record of the pleasure Pat and Ian took in consolidating their respective work into one new whole. The poems are presented in their original duelling-poet format--a submission from one poet followed by a corresponding poem from the other.

Interchange

What happens in a reader's mind when a poem slips into view to entice them on a brief (or prolonged) thinking excursion? What transpires when they commit to paper the thoughts, impressions, feelings, and memories evoked by poetry plunked (rather randomly) into their world?

In this book, you will witness an artsy conversation between poet, Ian Cognitō, and prose writer, Anne Marie Carson. Their interchange in print highlights Anne Marie’s creative flights as inspired by poems sent to her, by Ian, via Email.

Note: Ian and Anne Marie have never met, yet muse and muser they are and will remain. Which is which? Read 'Interchange' and decide for yourself.
